Maddi Nicholson is an Artist and founder Director of Art Gene a visual art charity and Arts Council National Portfolio Organisation in Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria.
She leads Art Gene’s programme of environmentally aware placemaking, socially engaged art projects, artists residencies and exhibitions, Engaging artists and communities in the revisioning of their social, natural and built environments.
As an artist she produces challenging works, celebrating cultural and social distinctiveness, often working in places percived as socially and culturally bereft. Her northern rural working class upbringing is the root of her practice; vernacular structures, small scalefarming, cultural and social traditions and the female experience. Making works from the stuff of peoples lives, stitching to signage, inflated, recycled, or rethought sculptures, mobile apps, photography and video.
